Projections: Difficult Daughters
The Jack S. Blanton Museum
August 27 - January 4, 2004

There is a difference in the way the younger artists and older artists in Difficult Daughters approach the theme of isolation. Both of the younger artists use bratty, Lolita-like personas in videos that they star in. They surround themselves in the worlds that they love to hate and perform "bad girl" actions, using the camera to tease their audience. The older artists, Rosmarie Trockel and Regina Vater, don't rely on sex appeal to seduce their audience. Rosemarle Trockel's A la Motte is the most coded work in the exhibition and proves most fruitful when thought of as a metaphor in the context of gender stereotypes.
